Special Olympics

My kids have been participating in Special Olympics for a little over a year now. They (we) are part of a wonderful S.O. team and they’ve bowled, swam, played softball, and now they are playing basketball. It has been such a wonderful experience for them!
Yesterday we went to a Special Olympics basketball clinic with the Denver Nuggets. I really should have made R sit out, it hasn’t been a full two weeks since her concussion… But I stayed close and watched carefully, ready to pull her out if any of the activities looked like there was a possibility of her getting hit in the head. It was very well organized though, not chaotic at all, and she was able to stay in for the whole clinic. (Yay!)
Here are some pictures…
They started the whole thing with some demonstrations by the cheerleaders. We couldn’t believe some of the stuff they were doing!

Both kids temporarily formed new career plans after watching them. R wants to be a cheerleader, and M wants to be one of the guys who throws them up in the air.

Then they got down to business.
All of the really tall guys in these pictures are Denver Nugget basketball players, unfortunately I NEVER watch basketball so I know who none of them are…
Check out R’s feet in this picture… She was really trying to make that basket!

It was a fun afternoon, the kids had a great time…
We stopped outside the Pepsi Center for one last picture before heading home…

Looks like fun! I don’t know if I would have let that hottie cheerleader that close to Joel, it might have rubbed off some female hormones and started puberty!
I’m glad R was feelling better so she could enjoy the day, what a bummer it would have been if she missed out.
Looks like loads of fun. i know that you said that you were very careful about R and the activities that she was involved in, but when i saw the first photo, i thought that that was one of the things that the SO kids were doing; not just the cheerleaders! Had me going there for a minute! lol
What fun. I can’t help you out with the players names. I fall asleep during basketball.
That looks like so much fun!
I would have had a blast if I were either one of those two. It looks like a great day out.
If I were M in the pic with the cheerleader I would have been terrified at that age. I’ll have to do the uncle thing and make sure he knows about the casual yet sneaky arm on the waist trick when taking pictures with women.
It comes in handy.
What a fun opportunity for the kids! I find sports in person so much more fun than just watching on TV.
And I see the kids have great career goals. hee hee oh well, let them have fun. I know that the YMCA puts on cheerleading camps at the local school…and of course there’s that Alpine Cheerleading place up the road from Parker Gymnastics. But now thinking about it, it might be best and fun for the kids to just watch one of those how to be a cheerleader videos.
THAT IS AWESOME! Looks like they had a blast!
Looks like a great time! In looking at the pictures I did the same thing as J above…I at first thought that it was the SO kids that they were throwing into the air!
